Writing develops from single sentences into short structured pieces with a beginning, middle and end. Children write for real purposes — recounts, instructions, letters and stories — and begin using question marks, exclamation marks and simple connectives.

Spelling covers common patterns and the first statutory word lists, and handwriting begins to join. Talking and listening work includes explaining ideas to a group.
