P2 Language and Literacy establishes systematic phonics. Children learn letter sounds and digraphs, blend to read and segment to spell, and build a bank of high-frequency words recognised on sight.

Reading develops alongside comprehension — retelling a story in the right order, talking about characters, and answering questions about what they have read. Writing progresses from captions to simple sentences with capital letters, full stops and finger spaces.

Talking and listening remain assessed strands in their own right, so speaking in full sentences and responding to what others say are taught rather than assumed.
