P1 · Northern Ireland Curriculum
In Northern Ireland, primary science sits inside The World Around Us, an Area of Learning that brings together science and technology, geography and history. In P1 it is about exploring and noticing.
Children look closely at plants, minibeasts and animals in their own environment, talk about the weather and seasons, explore how materials feel and behave, and investigate movement through pushing, pulling, rolling, floating and sinking.
The purpose at this stage is curiosity and careful observation. Children are encouraged to wonder aloud, try something, and describe what actually happened — the habit that carries into every later investigation.
