Verbal Reasoning

11+ (Eleven Plus)

Verbal Reasoning tests a student's ability to work with words, letters and codes under time pressure: it's not a measure of vocabulary alone, but of logical thinking applied to language. Common question types include letter sequences, code-breaking (where letters are shifted or substituted according to a rule), word analogies ("hot is to cold as up is to ___"), and finding hidden words within longer words or sentences.

Because question types are drawn from a fairly well-defined pool (roughly 20–25 distinct formats across the major exam providers), familiarity with the format itself is often as important as the underlying reasoning skill: a student who has never seen a code-breaking question can be confused by the format even if the logic is simple once explained.
