Science — MYP 4

International Baccalaureate · Ages 14-15

MYP 4 usually separates biology, chemistry and physics into distinct courses, and the content aligns closely with IGCSE or the first year of a two-year secondary science programme.

Biology covers cells, transport, enzymes, genetics and ecology; chemistry covers atomic structure, bonding, the mole and reaction types; physics covers mechanics, energy, waves and electricity with full quantitative treatment.

Laboratory work is formally assessed against the MYP criteria, with students designing their own investigations and evaluating method and data quality in detail.

Key topics covered

  • Cells & Transport — Cell structure, diffusion, osmosis, active transport and enzymes.
  • Genetics & Ecology — DNA, inheritance, variation, ecosystems and human impact.
  • Atomic Structure & Bonding — Electron arrangement, ionic and covalent bonding and structure.
  • Quantitative Chemistry — The mole, reacting masses, concentration and balanced equations.
  • Mechanics & Energy — Newton's laws, momentum, work, power, energy transfer and efficiency.
  • Waves & Electricity — Wave properties, the EM spectrum, circuits, resistance and power.
  • Experimental Design — Independent investigation, uncertainty, data processing and evaluation.
