Grade 4 expects students to justify what they say about a text with evidence from it. Comprehension covers theme, summarizing, comparing texts on the same subject, and distinguishing fact from opinion.
Writing produces multi-paragraph pieces for different audiences and purposes, and students begin short research tasks requiring notes and a source. Media literacy — a distinct strand in most Canadian provinces — looks at how media texts are constructed and who they are aimed at.
